Historical Museum
The Rendsburg Historical Museum in the Cultural Centre's Museums
... began as the museum of local history, still recalled by many of Rendsburg’s residents, whose collection history dates back over 100 years.
The presentation of the urban and cultural history of Rendsburg begins with a display of detailed models of the city, which are still today the trademark of the Rendsburg Historical Museum. Questions regarding the history of Rendsburg are answered in depth in smaller exhibits on individual themes – for example, about the military and the history of the garrison, seafaring, shipbuilding and canals, market activity in the 1900s, guilds and skilled trades, criminal prosecution, industrialisation based on the example of Carlshütte, and everyday life in the refugee city of Rendsburg starting from 1945 under allied responsibility.
Glazed earthenware from Rendsburg and premium pewter are also on display; the old shop counter of former ironmonger Paul Matz from Königstrasse is a delight for the people of Rendsburg and many others. What did the children of Rendsburg play with at the beginning of the 20th century? When did bathtubs make their first appearance in Rendsburg, and what was a ‘golden bucket’? What was an ‘eider bull’, and how many workers built the Kiel Canal?
The Historical Museum has boasted an additional attraction since November 2011, when the Rendsburg collector Reinhard Jahnke handed his complete collection of antique lead toys over to the museum. It can now be viewed in the north wing.
Scenes from everyday life in a Rendsburg gone-by come to life in historical films, which museum guests can view in our small film studio.
We are looking forward to your visit!
